M5 car crash: Child in serious condition after horror crash on West Country nmotorway

A CHILD is in a serious condition after a horror smash between two cars on the M5 - leaving the motorway at a complete standstill.

The youngster was airlifted to Bristol Children's Hospital after the crash between Weston-super-Mare and Burnham-On-Sea.

It is not known whether they suffered life-threatening injuries.

The crash meant travel chaos for thousands of Brits heading home from their Bank Holiday weekend breaks.

Police confirmed one injury from the collision shortly before midday - with resulting traffic tailbacks stretching for 15 miles.

People left their vehicles and some even climbed onto their roofs to look down on the giant queues.

Some youngsters were snapped kicking a ball about on one deserted stretch of the dual-carriageway.

The accident, between junctions 21 and 22, shut all six lanes of traffic with Avon and Somerset Police warning drivers of the closure.

The road re-opened at around midday but congestion is still very heavy.

This weekend has been blighted with traffic chaos, most notably on the M20 which was shut overnight on Saturday after a lorry carrying a digger slammed into a concrete bridge causing it to fall on vehicles passing below.

Miraculously, no one was killed with a motorcyclist treated for broken ribs after being struck by debris.

The M20 has reopened fully today and drivers have been seen travelling cautiously below the remains of the footbridge.

Last week the M5 was closed by a woman threatening to throw herself off of the runway, causing huge tailbacks.

It has been exceptionally busy on Britain's roads with TWICE as many families heading out onto the motorways than last year.
